Las Vegas is known by many as the casino capital of the world, and for good reason. Between the Strip, downtown, and the surrounding areas, Las Vegas is home to over 100 of the largest casino resorts in America. Having legalized gambling in 1931, Las Vegas was the birthplace of the United States’ first legal casinos. More than 80 years later, this city can still call itself one of the premier gambling destinations in the world.
Though it has often battled for business with other towns across the country like Atlantic City, it has always managed to stay on top. Today it has become not only the most popular gambling destination in America, but is now also a popular city for live entertainment and partying. Below we have taken the time to review the most popular casinos within the city of Las Vegas in full depth.

Las Vegas is home to a few different types of casinos, though most of them are resort casinos. A resort casino has a casino and hotel, along with other amenities. The resort casinos that line Las Vegas Boulevard have a complete offering of slots and table games, most of which are able to be played at any hour of the day or night. These resorts are more than just a hotel and casino though, because many of them boast an array of restaurants, shops, and other entertainment options. What differentiates one casino from another is the size of the casino itself, and the variety of games which it offers.

For example, Mandalay Bay boasts a 135,000 square foot casino while Harrah’s has a casino that is just over 85,000 square feet. The size of the casino can sometimes make all the difference because in most cases, the bigger the casino, the more games they are going to offer. Size doesn’t always indicate a comprehensive offering of games, however, because the Cosmopolitan, despite its large casino, lacks a poker room.
Not every casino in Las Vegas has a hotel, restaurants, and shops; in fact, there are a handful of standalone casinos as well. An example of one of these casinos on the Strip is Slots-a-Fun. As the name suggests, Slots-a-Fun primarily only offers slots.

The legal history of gambling in Las Vegas can be traced back to the early 1930s, when the first casinos were licensed and opened. La Bayou was the first licensed casino and it officially opened its doors in 1931. Gambling was legalized in Las Vegas and other cities in Nevada like Reno primarily due to the harsh effects of the Great Depression. During the late 1920s and 1930s the Great Depression was leaving many families without any money or work, but Las Vegas, with its newly formed gambling industry, was mostly free from the sting of the Depression.
In the early years, the most frequented casinos were located downtown, on or near Fremont Street. After only 10 years that paradigm began to shift when Tommy Hull opened up El Rancho, the first resort and casino in Las Vegas. El Rancho was built overlooking the very street that would later be given the name the Las Vegas Strip. Nowadays the Strip is most tourists’ destination when they come to visit Las Vegas.
Casinos in Las Vegas continued to draw in countless visitors from all over the United States and the globe, but in the 1970s the atmosphere of the casinos in the city began to change. Due to the emergence of Atlantic City as a gambling town on the east coast, Las Vegas hotel and casinos were forced to up the ante. Quickly, the old hotel and casinos began transforming into fortresses of all types of entertainment. Soon thereafter, visitors to Las Vegas’ new resort hotel and casinos could eat, sleep, gamble, and catch a show all under one roof. The dawn of resort hotels and casinos made Las Vegas more appealing to the entire family, not solely those looking to gamble.
Even though today you can do just about anything in Las Vegas, its main attraction is still the lights and sounds of its many casinos. For over 80 years Las Vegas has been dubbed the gambling capital of the world, and with all this city has to offer, it is easy to understand why.

– In Las Vegas, you must be 21 years of age to gamble at casinos.
– In Las Vegas, you must be 21 to drink or buy alcohol at casinos.
– Though drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) at most casinos are free, tipping the waiter or waitress is a common courtesy.
– Smoking is permitted in most casinos, though it is important to be wary of all marked non-smoking areas.

Bazaar Meat by José Andrés is a carnivorous celebration by a James Beard award-winning chef. The menu features unique items like geoduck, caviar flights and expertly executed steaks and loins.

Like every other aspect of the hotel, the lobby is beautifully furnished and contemporary.

Two pools offer markedly different experiences. Foxtail Pool is family-friendly (though there is a full-service bar) and great for lounging. Retro Pool Lounge on the roof is only for those 21+ and offers a more intimate setting.

Guests and locals receive complimentary admission, so chat up some strangers and you may get some insider knowledge or recommendations.

A 24-hour fitness center is located on the second level of the Story Tower. It offers cardio and weight training equipment as well as free weights. It doesn’t feel state of the art, but it doesn’t feel as cramped as other hotel gyms.

There were housekeeping carts blocking the hallway and dragon silhouettes on the carpeting. It was almost like the hotel was urging me to turn around and get back into my car.

Excalibur king room

Let’s just start out by acknowledging that no royalty would ever stay in this king room. Again, it cost less than $40.

But from the moment I stepped off the elevator, I was hit with a smell I couldn’t quite identify: a mix of leftover 1990s cigarettes (it was a nonsmoking floor) mixed with must.

There were housekeeping carts blocking the hallway and dragon silhouettes on the carpeting. It was almost like the hotel was urging me to turn around and get back into my car.

Here is where I will pause and say that the room was clean, the locks worked and I felt safe. The water pressure was good and the air conditioning was strong.

So, if that is all you are looking for, it was a $40 well spent. But for just a few dollars more, you can get a room at the much nicer MGM Grand, Park MGM or New York, New York.

That’s about the end of my niceties. Let’s enter the room.

(Photo by Scott Mayerowitz/The Points Guy)

The photo above speaks volumes: Everything in the room was chipped, dented, dated and basic.

There are so many words to describe the furniture. Nothing quite matched. It was all in bad shape but usable. The television was ridiculously small but was, at least, a flat-screen model.

It felt as if someone had simply rummaged through other hotel bankruptcies to pick up a bunch of cheap furniture. There wasn’t even any theming here: I might have preferred a medieval-inspired bed and a set of thrones in the sitting area.

(Photo by Scott Mayerowitz/The Points Guy)

But no, the Excalibur’s theme pretty much ended in the hallway. This was just a hodgepodge of random hotel furniture. Power outlets were scarce and nowhere near the nightstands.

Like I said, thankfully, the air conditioning was strong.

Then there was the bathroom.

(Photo by Scott Mayerowitz/The Points Guy)

It had a toilet that flushed, a sink that worked and a shower with decent pressure. (I’m really trying to be nice here but that’s about all I can say.)

Nothing about the shower was inviting, except perhaps the thought you might wash off some of the hotel’s grime by stepping (quickly) into it.

If I had packed shower shoes or flip-flops, I probably would have worn them.

There were both bulk shampoo and soap dispensers in the shower and individual bottles on the counter.

Finally, there was my view.

This was probably the best part of the room. Too bad the windows were so dirty that I couldn’t always enjoy it. I could see most of the Strip from here, and the view looked right over the New York, New York roller coaster.

A few hours later, I regretted that proximity. The window lacked any real soundproofing and, as I was trying to sleep, I kept hearing people scream as they went off the first drop.

The hallway door and connecting room door weren’t thick either and I heard plenty of noise through both. (Pro tip: Always travel with spare earplugs and download a white noise app to your phone.)

For the largest, most posh casinos and newest games, the Strip is the place to play. The Venetian offers one of the world’s largest casinos, featuring a race and sports book, a popular poker room and plenty of slots and video machines.

Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace is a casino known as a destination for high rollers, in no small part because it keeps popping up in movies playing that part. This is a place with plenty of high limit games, so come prepared to spend some money. Poker players can enjoy a large room that offers a daily tournament schedule. A race and sports book give players a vast array of games to watch and bet on, plus private booths with their own individual screens. Numerous restaurants, an A-list of entertainers and an upscale shopping mall are also on the grounds of the hotel, in case you decide to give Lady Luck a break for a while.

Recommended for Casinos because: Caesars Palace has an upscale reputation as a high-limits casino but players will find a wide selection of games.

Terrisa’s expert tip: The poker room at Caesars Palace was recently relocated and now offers players 4,500 square-foot poker room featuring Pai Gow, Texas Hold’em, Let it Ride and Three Card Poker.
